Small fiber sensory neuropathy (SFSN) is a disorder where only the small sensory cutaneous nerves are affected. The majority of patients with this condition experience sensory disturbances that start in the feet and progress upwards.

This condition is often caused by impaired glucose metabolism, which is an early or pre-diabetic state. It may advance to typical diabetic polyneuropathy. Glucose metabolism is not an underlying cause in many patients, however.

Symptoms include pins-and-needles, pricks, tingling, and numbness. Others may feel a burning pain or coldness.
